Country Director – Burundi (3‑year contract)

About the role

The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) World Service is seeking a senior leader to serve as Country Director for Burundi. This three‑year national contract position provides strategic oversight of humanitarian and development programmes across the country, with regular travel to field locations.

Key responsibilities

• Provide overall strategic leadership and management of the country programme.
• Ensure effective delivery of programmes in livelihoods, protection, social cohesion, climate resilience, youth empowerment and emergency preparedness.
• Oversee financial stewardship, compliance, and resource mobilisation.
• Lead staff development, performance management and organisational growth.
• Represent LWF with government authorities, donors, UN agencies, churches and civil society.
• Maintain strong partnerships with local stakeholders and ensure alignment with LWF values and mission.

Required profile

• Proven senior‑level experience managing humanitarian or development programmes, preferably in Burundi or similar contexts.
• Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and drive results.
• Strong understanding of the local political, social and economic environment.
• Eligibility to work under a national employment contract (Burundi national or permanent resident with legal work authorization).
• Willingness to travel regularly to field locations.
