Volunteer for Elderly Care in Bujumbura

About the role

The Volunteer will support Burundi Elderly Home Care (BEHC) in its daily activities aimed at improving the well‑being of elderly individuals in Bujumbura. This part‑time, on‑site position involves providing home‑based care, companionship, and assistance in accessing food, shelter, and healthcare services.

Key responsibilities

• Assist elderly beneficiaries with basic daily tasks and personal care.
• Provide companionship and emotional support to reduce isolation.
• Help coordinate access to food, shelter, and medical services.
• Participate in community outreach and awareness campaigns.
• Organise and support social‑support activities and events.
• Assist staff in documenting needs, progress, and outcomes of beneficiaries.
• Support advocacy initiatives and collaborate with community members and partners.
• Maintain a respectful, safe, and dignified environment for all elderly individuals.

Required profile

• Strong interpersonal, communication, and active‑listening abilities.
• Empathy, patience, and high emotional maturity when working with vulnerable populations.
• Basic organisational and time‑management skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural, community‑based setting.
• Commitment to non‑discrimination, human‑rights respect, and alignment with BEHC’s mission.
• Fluency in local languages and/or French; basic English is an asset.
• Previous experience in social work, caregiving, community development, or volunteering is advantageous but not required.
• Willingness to be on‑site in Bujumbura and to undertake field visits as needed.
