Country Manager - Burundi

About the role

Kahawatu Foundation, an NGO under Sucafina, is seeking a Country Manager to lead its coffee‑focused development programmes in Burundi. You will shape a decade‑long roadmap to improve coffee productivity, farmer incomes and household resilience while integrating regenerative agriculture and climate adaptation.

Key responsibilities

• Define and deliver Kahawatu’s vision for Burundi, translating strategic goals into scalable field programmes that strengthen coffee production and farmer livelihoods.
• Oversee design and execution of high‑quality programmes covering coffee productivity, quality, regenerative agriculture, climate adaptation, income diversification, gender, youth and household resilience.
• Build evidence through meaningful indicators, use data to refine programmes and communicate impact to partners, funders and the wider coffee sector.
• Mobilise partnerships with government, donors, development organisations and private‑sector actors, and lead fundraising and communication campaigns.
• Provide clear direction to agronomy, field, monitoring, evaluation and administrative teams, fostering a collaborative and accountable culture.
• Ensure sound financial management, compliance with local regulations and transparent reporting while maintaining operational agility.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years of experience in agriculture, coffee, rural development or a related field.
• Proven track record designing and delivering agriculture‑based programmes with measurable results.
• Experience leading multicultural teams and managing significant responsibilities.
• Strong ability to build trusted relationships with communities, governments, funders and private‑sector partners.
• Fluency in French and basic English; Kirundi or Swahili is a plus.
• Willingness to live in Burundi and travel regularly to coffee‑growing communities.
